Telekom Srbija agreements with Telenor Serbia will drive market liberalisation and consumer choice

More operators means more competition and lower prices

Belgrade, 29th January 2021: Telekom Srbija, Serbia’s largest telecommunications and multimedia provider, has signed a package of fibre optic infrastructure and content distribution agreements with Telenor Serbia. The companies have signed a package of agreements covering ethernet bitstream, rights to access the network and maintenance and a media content distribution agreement.

These new arrangements replicate the success the company has already achieved with its fixed line copper network, helping Telekom Srbija to realise new revenue streams from its existing assets. This means other operators can provide their customers with highspeed internet and TV content without having to develop their own infrastructure. More operators providing more services at an increasingly competitive price is an indication of the continued development of the national telecommunications landscape.

The company will pay a rental fee to utilise Telekom Serbia’s network. Network sharing arrangements of this nature are common in the telecoms sector globally. The deal is non-exclusive and does not include any non-compete clauses, leaving both companies free to secure additional agreements with other providers and operators, should they wish.

The package of agreements has been notified to the Serbian competition authority for review. Telekom Serbia is confident that the arrangement is compliant with competition law and hopes to receive approval shortly. The new agreements will only be implemented once this has been secured.

Vladimir Lučić, Telekom Srbija’s Chief Executive Officer said: “Serbia will soon have a new active player in the retail markets for fixed telephony and high speed internet providing customers and consumers with greater choice. In addition Telenor will be able to provide its customers with content from Telekom Srbija, but it will also be able to purchase other content from elsewhere. Similar arrangements with other operators could also be entered into in the future. This market liberalisation brings numerous benefits for customers, for the market and for Telekom Srbija.“
