MTS TO DEVELOP ’’BELGRADE AMAZONIA“

As part of the environment protection campaign ’’mts saves your world“, launched to preserve natural resources of our country, the works are rounding off on cleaning canals in the Beljarica drainage basin, nearby Belgrade. This area, as a home to rich plant and wildlife, is also known as Belgrade  Amazonia, and its development is performed in line with the recommendation of the Ministry for Environmental Protection.

Mts customers have also taken an active part in this campaign, launched last year, since the funds for cleaning this oasis of nature were collected by allocating one dinar from each monthly postpaid bill of mts rate plans Morava, Omorika and Soko. Owing exactly to these joint efforts of mts and its customers in particular, significant funds have been invested in the preservation of Beljarica, whose dense forests, backwaters and ponds are populated by 136 bird species, of which as many as 108 are under state protection, such as the white-tailed eagle and black stork.

Beljarica plays an important part in defending the territory of the entire capital since it receives, as the floodplain of Danube, the excess of water during each flood, and thus adds up to the protection of the city area from the water surcharge. During the past decades, the drainage canals of Beljarica have turned into waste dumps where all types of waste were common sights, which resulted in clogging of canals and massive die-off of fish.

Some 90% of water inflows have been cleansed thus far within the drive ’’mts saves your world“, while the works on other canals are being concurrently performed. Upon the completion of cleansing,  it is expected that flora and fauna of this area, being a part of an eco-network of international importance, will recover and regain its natural gloss.

This campaign is a unique example among telecom operators in Serbia, since mts, by allocating funds in this manner, contributes to the protection of environment, as an important segment of social responsibility.
